MOTS-c is a 16-amino-acid peptide encoded by a short open reading frame within the mitochondrial 12S rRNA gene, making it one of a small group of mitochondrial-derived peptides (described in 2015). Under metabolic stress it can move to the nucleus and influence gene expression.
